Video Documentary (Short Film)

Video Documentary (Short Film)

Short Film Guidelines and Submission
The film should not longer than 10 minutes and not shorter than 5 minutes. Preferably it is 10 minutes. The short video aim is to tell a story using audio-visual format. In making your film/video, make sure you have a script or a storyline to follow. In writing your script take note of the following rules (https://www.raindance.org/7-rules-for-writing-short-films/):

  • Please submit a synopsis of your research-based short film/documentary using this TEMPLATE.
  • The shorter the better – keep the script between 7-8 pages maximum. Make sure that your film doesn’t look cheap even if the production cost was cheap.
  • Keep the practicalities of writing in mind – Some scene needs time, therefore make sure you take that into consideration in plotting the scene, it might eat up your limited time.
  • Make it visual – Since this is a scientific video, you might be a constraint to be so detailed that it makes the story boring. Though it might help to have an anchor of a sort in the movie, making your presentation more visual makes it better. A film is a visual medium, you must show it, not tell it. A film is about telling stories in pictures, which is the most economical way of telling a story.
  • Find Single Moments – The best short films are often a single moment that is played out, but one that has a story at its heart or a conflict to be resolved.
  • Tell a story – You are making a video to make your point clearer. Re analyzed your research or the case you like to present. What do you like to portray, what is your take-home message? You start from that and draw your storyline.
  • Engage the reader or viewer – Since you have so little time to make an impression, the impact of page 1 of your script is crucial. The first few scenes of your film must be attractive enough to hook your viewer until the end of that 10 minutes play. The ending is also essential as it’s rare to truly feel moved at the end of a short, so work towards a meaningful, satisfying ending.
  • Beware of Clichés when Writing Short Films – The film you are making is a science-backed story. You might be enticed to write a literary piece that you lose the authenticity characteristic of research output.
  • Fade Out The audio – video format of your paper is intended to make the take-home message easier to digest. Use visuals and audio creatively. Let your film communicate to the audience the message you wanted to convey.
